KOT stands for Kitchen Order Ticket. It is the slip that tells the kitchen what to prepare for a table or order. Every restaurant, dhaba, café and cloud kitchen uses KOTs in some form, whether handwritten or printed by a POS.

What does a KOT contain?

• KOT number and time
• Table number, or takeaway/delivery order number
• Item names and quantities
• Special instructions such as "less spicy" or "no onion"
• Server or captain name

A KOT does not show prices or taxes. It is an internal instruction for the kitchen, not a document for the guest.

KOT vs bill: what's the difference?

The KOT goes to the kitchen when food is ordered. The bill goes to the guest when they are ready to pay. One table may generate several KOTs during a meal — starters, then mains, then desserts — but usually only one bill. Good restaurant billing software links all KOTs for a table to its final bill automatically, so nothing is missed or double-charged.

How KOT software works
